Charlie Watts: The Audio of Our 1994 Interview
Watts on His Favorite Jazz Drummers, the Rolling Stones, and More
During my 47 years as a music journalist, I've only interviewed one drummer, but what a remarkable guy. Charlie Watts proved to be gracious and insightful as we spoke on July 14, 1994, in the cafeteria of the Crescent School in Toronto. At the time the Rolling Stones were rehearsing for their Voodoo Lounge tour.
Charlie began by speaking about his favorite jazz ensembles and jazz drummers, and then we moved on to discussing his work with the Rolling Stones, his thoughts about John Bonham and Ginger Baker, the Stones vs. Beatles rivalry, and other subjects. A few months ago I posted a written transcription: https://jasobrecht.substack.com/p/cha...
If you’d like to listen in on the conversation, here’s the just-posted audio:
I hope you enjoy it!
